I was fortunate enough to win a scholarship to attend this week long camp last year. To me this is the ultimate in technology and hands on learning. During this week long camp we flew simulated missions to the International Space Station and simulated experiments and repairs to the station. We had up close views of the shuttle and orbiter as well as the Saturn 5 rockets that took men to the moon. In addition, we had time to establish connections to other teachers from all over the world. Many people took the opportunity to set up Skype visits to others classrooms for discussions and collaboration. After having been to the program I would strongly recommend it even without the scholarship!
The second website that that I would direct people to is: http://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/centers/marshall/erc/index.html for links to the space program and views from the Hubble telescope. The space program ties to more than just the Grade 6 curriculum because it looks math and sciences as well as literacy connections across many grades.
The third connection that I would like to address is the access to virtual field trips and talking live to people in the field like astronauts using Skype. I know that in Milton On there is a school named after Chris Hadfield one of our Canadian astronauts and future mission commander of the ISS. During his training missions he has Skyped with students at his school namesake so that they could experience the training and hear about upcoming missions. Talk about a motivational speaker with access to technology!
The fourth connection I would like to bring to people’s attention is the link to the Canadian Space Agency (http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/default.asp). As you can tell space and space exploration is something that interests me but it is also engaging for the students and links many curriculum components.
